Cooling systems are important elements in the transport sector and manufacturers need to simulate develop, dimension and validate them.
Sherpa Engineering has an extensive experience in engine, motor and circuit cooling cooling loop activities for vehicle and trucks industries. We count with more than ten years in accomplishing cooling system innovative projects.
We have acquired deep know-how in several research and industrial projects for the French car manufacturers and their suppliers, which has allowed us to develop specialized tools in modeling and control domains.
Sherpa Engineering offers a model-based approach according to the Bond-Graphs method and the General System Theory.
We have adopted a modular and efficient approach that is suitable for thermal systems (management of a thermal engine, fuel cell systems, batteries, etc) and fulfills cooling system development needs.
The PhiSimCoolingSystem model library has been designed to build cooling system models for simulation.
PhiSimCoolingSystem library is intended to model the global cooling system. It includes the heating and the cooling elements as well as a set of actuators and their control (pump, thermostat, valve, Fan, etc).
The library has been built in the PhiSim environment which is our own modeling and simulation tool. It is based on our basic PhiSim thermo-fluid library and allows access to various parameters such as temperature, flow and pressure in different circuit points.

Thermal engine for a vehicle
Modeling of a cooling system for a thermal engine in a conventional or hybrid vehicle is necessary to design and components choice and design, tuning and analysis of the temperature control system:
- Design and components choice: radiator, water pump, thermostat and fan unit
- Temperature monitoring of the thermal engine: quick increase of the engine temperature, temperature stabilization and critical threshold compliance
Fuel cell system
Cooling system in a fuel cell system must be controlled in order to ensure temperature stability at the fuel cell output and to minimize temperature gradient between input and output values.
The cooling system is a closed circuit encompassing electrical pump, Heat exchanger Air/Water with his fan and a Three-way valve. The latest is installed at pump output to split the flow between the Heat exchanger and bypass pipe.
