Typical example : Platforming unit

The platforming process increases the octane number (RON) by modification of the molecule structure. this unit consists of three successive sets heater-reactor. The RON target is obtained by respecting a specified Weighted Average Temperature Tij of the 3 reactors.
Using the multivariable predictive controller HIECON, the following objectives were satisfied in a hierarchical order :
- constraints on the skin temperature of the heaters
constraints on the pressure at burners
set point value specified to the Weighted Average Temperature
centering the feed rate around the nominal target of the plant
balance the reactors inlet temperatures (balance the aging of the catalyst)
The whole set of constraints being satisfied, that technology brought significant improvements :
- reduction of the fluctuations of the RON (factor higher than 2)
keeping the feed rate of the plant around its nominal value
increasing the life time of the catalyst by 8%
